Quick Tools to Help Build Resilient Teen Happiness

According to the Centers for Disease Control, symptoms of anxiety and depression are on the rise due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. That includes for teens and young adults, 25% of whom said they seriously considered suicide in the past month. The inability to fix what is wrong or cope with stress and anxiety can negatively impact different facets of life including health, relationships, and academic performance.

The good news? There are skills that you can learn and practice to increase happiness, and improve your ability to navigate through difficult times. Discover Your Happy is a collaborative effort between Discovery Education and LG Electronics USA – and extension of LG’s Experience Happiness program. Discovery Your Happy offers no-cost dynamic digital resources that help students build happiness skills. Based on cutting-edge research from The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, the resources are specifically designed for wherever learning is taking place.

A suite of new Discover Your Happy videos explores the science behind practicing the Six Sustainable Happiness skills to cultivate well-being and resiliency for success in school and beyond. Divided into six videos based upon each skill, these flexible assets can be used together as a class or assigned individually to students studying remotely or at school. Bonus: These videos also include peer ideas on how to practice the skills daily.

Generosity
Helping and being kind to others is intrinsically rewarding; by practicing generosity we can enhance our personal well-being. Help students create meaningful interactions through Generosity. 

Gratitude
Discovering happiness isn’t just appreciating new things, but also being grateful for what we already have and the good that other people contribute to our lives and in our world. Boost students’ emotional IQ with the power of Gratitude.

Human Connection
Connecting with one another is essential to our wellbeing; authentic, socially engaged relationships are the most reliable, enduring predictor of happiness in life. Set students up for success by helping them foster Human Connection. 

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is about truly noticing what's happening in each moment as it occurs, and being friendly and supportive towards arising thoughts or feelings. Introduce students to practical approaches they can take to reduce stress and focus on the here-and-now.

Positive Outlook
Life’s inevitable setbacks are easier to overcome if we lean on the power of Positive Outlook; increasing optimism and hope helps us see more possibilities and grow forth from adversity. Help nurture students’ resiliency by strengthening stamina towards long term goals.

Purpose
Having a Purpose and knowing that you can make a difference increases happiness. Encourage students to embrace core values and strive for something bigger than themselves.
